NBC Olympics Schedule 2018

US TV network NBC had cut away from the race and declared Veith the gold medalist, never considering that the 38th-ranked Super-G skier in the world whose best finish this year was 24th and who never had so much as podiumed in one of her 20 World Cup races could muster what Ledecka mustered. "It'll be a good setup and I'll watch the Olympics and root on all my teammates from her house with all her accolades hanging on the wall".

After missing the 2014 Sochi Games with a knee injury, Vonn, 33, will compete in the super-G on Saturday in South Korea - Friday night in the USA - hoping to become the oldest woman to win an Olympic Alpine medal.

Ledecka has several events remaining on her Olympics schedule in South Korea, from the women's parallel giant slalom in snowboarding to the downhill and Alpine combined in skiing. And for that race, she will not need to borrow anyone's gear. Vonn entered today's event ranked No. 10 in the World Cup's super-G standings and had competed in five super-G races this season, winvonnning December 16 in Val d'Isere, France.

"For me, the first reaction was like, 'Is this possible?'" Veith said.

Following her failed attempt at a medal, Vonn received hatemail from people back home in the United States.

After a litany of injuries, including two torn ACLs, two concussions and several broken bones, Vonn is interested in what life has in store for her post-skiing career, though that doesn't mean she'll be totally out of the spotlight.

"It's definitely shocking. In the Olympics a lot of weird things happen", said the 33-year-old.

American Lindsey Vonn, who went out first but made a mistake before the final jump and finished sixth, was stunned along with the rest of her rivals. Im proud of the way I skied and how I attacked the course.

Turns out, Ledecka's first sport was hockey, which was no surprise given her grandfather, Jan Klapac, won two Olympic medals in hockey for Czechoslovakia in 1964 and 1968.

Vonn missed the 2014 Olympics because of a right knee injury suffered at the 2013 world championships and a subsequent re-injury of the knee nine months later while training at Copper Mountain.

Vonn is expected to compete in three events at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Instead, Ester Ledecka of Czech Republic was the surprise victor in women's super-G.

Having finished second behind Sofia Goggia in Italian's backyard in January - after Goggia also won in Bad Kleinkerheim five days previously - Vonn came out on top a day later. But she proved here on Saturday (Friday night in the U.S.) that she's not just a novelty in the record books.

"Pure Ester", said Justin Reiter, her snowboard coach and a former US Olympian.

Still speaking in English, not her first language, she also offered perhaps the best answer, ever, to one of the most inane questions, ever: describe the overlap between snowboarding and skiing?
