The Cornyn-Murphy legislation has drawn support from Democrats and Republicans, although passage of gun legislation has often stalled in Congress.

Florida's House on Tuesday voted against formally considering a bill that would have banned many semiautomatic guns and large capacity magazines.

Scott organized three committees to look at school safety, mental health and gun safety issues that met Tuesday and vowed to make changes to better protect students. "The discussion has to be a longer, bigger and broader discussion". He is expected to hold a listening session Wednesday with high school students and teachers impacted by the mass shooting.

"I think common gun safety laws that we recently advocated for - universal background checks, restricting access to guns from those who are on no-fly lists, who are mentally ill patients, who should not have access to guns - is a way to go toward a direction of a safer environment", he said.

Levine takes aim at Florida's Legislature in the ad, saying that if it doesn't address the state's gun laws, "we will", referring to local officials in Florida. But there's still strong resistance by many Republicans to any gun-control measures.

Lawmakers will probably say that getting a new bill passed is almost impossible with only two and a half weeks left in the legislative session.

Students from the South Florida high school were tearful as they stepped down from the bus in Tallahassee to be welcomed with waves, cheers and somber applause from fellow teens. "When children's lives are at stake, it is time to step up and say something needs to change".

The Parkland students also plan to meet Wednesday with top legislative leaders, including Corcoran and Senate President Joe Negron. They've been featured in the news nearly constantly and have singled out the gun lobby with a goal to shame candidates who continue taking money from the NRA and other gun-rights groups.

Florida's Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who's now in his second term, is ineligible to run again.

Authorities said suspect Nikolas Cruz, 19, had a string of run-ins with school authorities that ended with his expulsion. Police were repeatedly called to his house throughout his childhood. That could mean raising the minimum age to purchase the weapon to 21, creating a waiting period and making it more hard for people who exhibit signs of mental illness from buying the weapon even without a diagnosis. Yet he legally purchased a semi-automatic rifle. "I was all for it".
