Trump appeared to be favourable to the idea.

President Donald Trump blasted NBC and CNN for spreading what he called "Fake News" for reporting that he would "give teachers guns" to combat the growing epidemic of school shootings in the US.

Trump needed a cheat sheet written by someone else to remind him to say "I hear you" to people affected by gun violence.

Wednesday he said 20 percent of educators might be qualified to carry weapons at school; Thursday he suggested 10, 20, or 40 percent of teachers might fit the bill. "What's being described by the president and others sounds more like a prison to me, with the teachers as armed guards and the students as prisoners".

"Bringing more guns into our schools does nothing to protect our students and educators from gun violence".

Trump himself pitched into the debate on the Florida situation while refusing to back down on his arming teachers proposal, saying the deputy who failed to challenge the shooter was either a "coward" or "didn't react properly under pressure".

Asked whether he'd provide federal funding for the armed teachers program, he said he would be opening to considering such funding for training.

At that event, Trump said teachers with firearms could end an attack "very quickly".

"A teacher would have a concealed gun on them".

"He certainly did a poor job", Mr Trump said. Our banks, our airports, our National Basketball Association games, our NFL games, our office buildings, our movie stars, our politicians, they're all more protected than our children at school, ' LaPierre said. Other teachers said they'd prefer everything from basics like tissues, tape, and paper to more special education teachers and guidance counselors.

Trump reiterated his earlier comments that he did not believe all teachers should be armed.

"The focus on mental illness is a distraction by Trump and the NRA", tweeted David Rothkopf, a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Nikolas Cruz was charged in last week's shooting at a Florida high school. "It takes police & first responders approximately 5 to 8 minutes to get to site of crime".

"I struggle to see how a teacher, even a highly trained teacher with a handgun, is going to go against somebody who's carrying an AR-15", she said.

"If he's not old enough to go buy a drink, buy a beer, he should not be able to buy a gun at 18 years old", Cary Gruber, whose son survived the shooting, told Trump at the listening session.

The session had several eye-watering moments as teenagers recalled the horror they witnessed and parents called for stricter gun control as the president listened. Neither union leader was invited to the White House meeting. It's an actual discussion, "Blake tweeted".

The NRA set up a booth at the conference to sign up new members and recruit campaign field workers for the November mid-term elections in which Democrats are trying to take over control of Congress from Trump's fellow Republicans.

Yes, the commander-in-chief who received millions of dollars in campaign donations from the National Rifle Association (NRA) wrote a reminder to himself to be empathetic towards the teenagers who survived one of the deadliest school massacres in modern USA history and the parents who lost their children to the nonsensical violence.

In the last post of his tweetstorm on Thursday morning, Trump outlined gun control policies he supports.

He has also emphasized the role of mental health in mass shootings and broached the idea of age limits for some gun sales. In a memorandum, Trump said although the Obama administration had repeatedly concluded that particular bump stock type devices were lawful to purchase and possess, he sought further clarification of the law restricting fully automatic machine-guns.
