Hertz cuts ties with NRA

The vehicle rental company Hertz and Symantec Corp., the software company that makes Norton Antivirus technology, did the same.

First National Bank of Omaha had been taking heat on social media due to its relationship with the National Rifle Association. The loss of a discount will neither scare nor distract one single NRA member from our mission to stand and defend the individual freedoms that have always made America the greatest nation in the world. United said it would no longer discount flights to the NRA's annual meeting. "As a result, First National Bank of Omaha will not renew its contract with the National Rifle Association to issue the NRA Visa Card", spokesperson Kevin Langin said in a statement Thursday.

The exodus of corporate names, ranging from a major insurer to auto rental brands and a household moving company, occurred after the NRA launched a counter-offensive against a student-led campaign for tighter USA gun ownership laws.

The conglomerate, which operates Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent a Car, and National Car Rental, said it ended a discount program available to NRA members, effective March 26.

Delta and United, two of America's largest passenger carriers, said Saturday they would back away from the group.

Before the corporate defections, almost two dozen companies nationwide had offered incentives to NRA members, according to ThinkProgress.com, a news site owned by the Center for American Progress Action Fund. But when reached for comment, Avis Budget Group told CNNMoney that it too was ending its partnership with the organization.

A Change.org petition calling on 25 companies to break ties with the NRA had received nearly 7,000 signatures by Saturday morning.


The insurance company MetLife Inc. discontinued its discount program with the NRA on Friday. Security systems maker Simplisafe Inc. also dropped the gun group today.

None of the companies gave details about why or when they chose to cut ties with the NRA, but the news comes as the hashtag #BoycottNRA has circulated widely on social media.

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines announced this weekend that they will cut ties with the National Rifle Association in the wake of the deadly mass shooting in Parkland, Florida earlier this month.

The mass killing focused renewed attention on the NRA, which is credited with blocking gun control measures for years through millions of dollars in campaign contributions and pressure from its large membership base. The channel features programming that leans heavily on speeches by NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre and spokeswoman Dana Loesch.

Also Friday, Wyndham Worldwide, parent company of major hotel brands including Travelodge, Howard Johnson, Ramada and Days Inn, tweeted that it "is no longer affiliated with the NRA". A 19-year-old used a legally obtained AR-15 to open fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 people and wounding at least 16 more on February 14. The program that provided coverage for people involved in gun-related incidents or accidents had been under scrutiny by regulators over marketing issues.

Lockton, another insurance firm, continues to underwrite policies for the NRA Carry Guard program, according to the NRA's website.

Under the hashtag #BoycottNRA, social media is now calling out companies that offer special benefits to NRA members. However, during the same exchange, Rubio refused to say he would renounce NRA donations.
