Trump slams deputy who waited outside Florida high school during shooting

If a teacher had been carrying a concealed firearm at the Florida school, "the teacher would have shot the hell out of him before he knew what happened", Trump said.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) broke its silence on the issue of USA gun control in the wake of last week's deadly Florida shooting, with the head of the organisation launching a vigorous defence of gun rights on Thursday.

Trump had earlier proposed raising from 18 to 21 the minimum age to buy more guns than at present - like the assault-style rifle used by 19-year-old Florida shooter Nikolas Cruz - and making it more hard for the mentally ill to own firearms. A spokesman later said Trump was speaking specifically about semi-automatic weapons.

Meanwhile, teachers are using the hashtag #armmewith to call out for what support they'd prefer from the government, rather than guns.

Pierre's appearance at the conference comes eight days after one of the most deadly school shootings in American history took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School - a gun spree that left 17 dead and 14 injured.

The mayor called for a ban on assault weapons and bump stocks-which almost convert semiautomatic weapons into automatic weapons-more thorough background checks and prohibiting individuals will mental illness and those on terror watch lists from buying guns. "What they want is more restrictions on the law-abiding", LaPierre said.

Those roll-up metal cages used in shopping malls might help keep shooters out of some parts of a school building.

Loesch, who launched into an angry tirade against the media, also said Democratic lawmakers, in addition to the media, are taking advantage of the shooting.

LaPierre made no mention of the student survivors of the Parkland shooting, who have sparked an unprecedented wave of youth-led gun-reform protests across the U.S. Marco Rubio of Florida and Pat Roberts of Kansas, who yesterday expressed support of barring people under 21 from buying AR-15s.

Trump's tweet came just minutes before LaPierre took the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference, where he criticized Democrats including Senator Chris Murphy of CT for "politicizing" the shooting in Parkland.

“Trump can propose anything he wants but it’s got to get through two houses of Congress and the Supreme Court,” Paradis said

"The first to go will be the Second Amendment", LaPierre said.

"The whole idea from some of our opponents that armed security makes us less safe is completely ridiculous", LaPierre said. President Trump has voiced some support for the idea, though others vigorously oppose it.

Donald Trump explained that "gun-free zones" means "let's go in and let's attack because bullets aren't coming back at us" for the shooters.

Right before LaPierre took the stage, NRA national spokeswoman Dana Loesch also spoke, striking a far angrier tone than she had in a CNN town hall Wednesday evening and even admitting the accusations she was about to make would be controversial. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.; New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio; New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; Sen. Authorities say he was armed with a semiautomatic AR-15 assault-style rifle that he had purchased legally past year.

"Evil walks among us", LaPierre said.

The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) reported that between 1979 and 2009, firearms killed 116,385 youths, and in 2008-09 nearly 6,000 kids lost their lives to guns.

The White House has said Trump will soon lay out a package of school and gun safety proposals for Congress to consider. But when prominent gun control groups such as Everytown for Gun Safety basically shrug in response to this relatively small-bore proposal - and even the NRA isn't overly exercised - it is pretty clear not the answer.

"Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks!" he tweeted earlier Thursday.

Trump reiterated on Twitter he would advocate for tightening background checks for gun buyers, with an emphasis on mental health, and lifting the age limit to buy some kinds of guns.

New information this morning into the school shooting last week that the school resource officer failed to engage the shooter.
