Green Bay Packers Making Progress In Contract Talks With Aaron Rodgers

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said at the NFL Combine that he believes Jordy Nelson is "still a really good player in my eyes". It's important for them - and for teams like the Green Bay Packers. That has to be another reason why the Packers want the deal done soon, though Gutekunst said seeing other quarterbacks sign contracts doesn't factor into the urgency.

Aaron Rodgers could soon claim the mantle of highest paid-quarterback in the National Football League from Jimmy Garoppolo's grasp. When you have the best player in the National Football League, it's not going to be low-cost, you know what I mean? But hanging over his franchise's head right now is the future payment for his franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is due a contract extension, even though he has 2 years left on his current deal. On ESPN Radio, he said the move was made "without consulting me".

Rodgers hasn't said much about his contract situation publicly in recent months, although he said before last season that he wasn't concerned about when a new deal would get done.

All three players' deals now run through the 2018 season, but Nelson is set to earn $12.5 million this upcoming year, Cobb will earn $12.7 million and Matthews will earn $11.3 million.

The only seasoned team veteran with an expiring contract is safety Morgan Burnett, who is set to become a free agent at the start of the new league year on March 14.

"I know my value in this league, and I know the team appreciates me", Rodgers said last summer. While I wouldn't go as far as calling all of them potential starters, the talent is there for them to make an impact on occasion.

Reuters/Bob Donnan-USA TODAYGreen Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers looks to pass as Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Thomas Davis and defensive tackle Kawann Short defend. "I have a lot of confidence in (general manager) Brian (Gutekunst) and (director of football operations) Russ (Ball) and Aaron as well".

"We would like it to [be finalized this offseason]", Gutekunst said.
