Dafne Keen, the young breakout star of Logan, is also in final talks to join the project as the main character, Lyra, a young orphan girl who finds herself thrust into a unsafe adventure when she sets out to find a kidnapped friend.

Academy Award-winning director, Tom Hooper, has signed on to direct at least one of the episodes.

Keen is in final talks to portray the central character, Lyra Belacqua, a young girl who finds herself caught up in a unsafe adventure after her friend is kidnapped. Feisty, clever and tough, Lyra is a great character for any young actress to play and as we saw by her performance as X-23 in James Mangold's film, Keen seems like the flawless fit for the role.

Plans for Jack Thorne's adaptation of Philip Pullman's fantasy book trilogy were announced in November 2015, but there had been no word on the casting until now.

BBC One's eight-part series will span Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, which includes The Golden Compass (also known as Northern Lights), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. It tells the story of the coming of age of two children, Lyra and Will, who wander through a series of parallel universes.

Stay tuned to Nerdist for even more on this mini-series as it develops and thank your lucky stars that we'll finally have something to wash the taste of that truly abysmal movie adaptation out of our mouths once and for all. Both Apple and Netflix reportedly have their eye on snagging USA and global rights to the series. It will be exec produced by Pullman, Tranter, Gardner, Toby Emmerich and Carolyn Blackwood for New Line; Bethan Jones for BBC One and Deborah Forte for Scholastic. The first instalment was adapted for cinema in 2007 starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, with Lyra played by Dakota Blue Richards. Production on the series is expected to kick off relatively soon in Wales, with more casting news to be revealed in the coming weeks. His Dark Materials will mark Keen's return to television.
