Google is also adding voice navigation search in India in six additional languages - Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam - on the Android app. Google on Tuesday launched "Plus Codes", an open source solution that assigns unique codes to different locations.

Smart Address Search is the next innovative approach as a solution in counter to challenges on finding complicated addresses in the country. Once Google verifies the address, it will become searchable. Google Maps has taken into consideration the complexity of residential addresses which are usually unique in format and also vary across regions.

You can simply Google the copied Plus code or paste it on Google Maps to find direction to that address.

This system is based on dividing the geographical surface of the Earth into tiny "tiled areas", attributing a unique code to each of them.

To find an address using a Plus Code, all you have to do is enter that Plus Code into the Search Bar of Google or Google Maps (either desktop or mobile), and you will instantly see the location. This code simply comprises a "6-character + City" format that can be generated, shared and searched by anyone - all that's needed is Google Maps on a smartphone. These Plus codes can come in handy for a wide variety of reasons for instance- while communicating the venue of a temporary event, guiding emergency services to afflicted locations, or providing an identifiable location for complicated addresses. In an another step aimed at facilitating accurate and easy searching on Maps, Google has introduced an "Add an Address" feature.

"Millions of people and places in India are hard to locate - especially those in remote areas". With 'Add an Address' feature, Google is aiming to bring those locations on its map that have been missing till so far.

Well, I don't know about other features, but I'm looking forward to using the Plus Codes in Google Maps and I hope third-party apps like Ola incorporate this feature soon as it will make it easier for me to navigate the driver to pick-up location in one go.

Plus Codes turns long addresses into 10-digit alpha-numeric codes, making it easier for users to share.

Ruhela said that Google India has been working to use Machine Learning (ML) to improve the "Smart Address Search" result. Now, Google maps will understand the landmarks in an address, which might not be available on the app. Now you can easily add a missing address to Google Maps for verification. It will try to refer other information and piece them together to provide options of landmarks and points of interest that the user can best identify with - exactly like a person would have done by asking people on the way to a destination.

Suren noted that since the time Google India launched Navigation in Hindi three years ago, they have consistently received requests to be able to change the voice-guided navigation from English to a local language.
