Soler, who rides for Movistar and trailed his British rival by 37 seconds ahead of the eighth and final stage in the Nice hinterland, claimed his biggest career win by just four seconds.

However, his narrow advantage over a congested chasing pack was not enough to hold onto the lead on Sunday when Soler attacked Team Sky's De la Cruz in an attempt to claim both the final stage and the overall title.

"It went full gas at the first intermediate sprint for the time bonus", the 24-year-old Soler said. "I dream about the Tour de France, but I still have to learn".

"I'm progressing each year and I'm getting used to riding at that level".

Yates made contact with other favourites in the descent into Nice but finished sixth, 38 seconds behind De La Cruz and second placed Omar Fraile of Spain.

Soler did not have the legs to contest the sprint finish, with De la Cruz overhauling Fraile at the death. I had a stage win yesterday.

Yates timed his attack to perfection at the end of a challenging day in the saddle in wet and cold conditions in the mountains north of Nice, accelerating out of the wheel of team-mate Roman Kreuziger, before launching another move to dispatch of Ion Izagirre to take the stage win.

Another strong week comes after De la Cruz took time trial success on the final stage of the Ruta del Sol in February to prove his future GC credentials, performances that will surely earn him a place in the team's Giro d'Italia squad in two month's time.

"I'm getting closer. a year ago I lost Romandie on the last day as well by 20 seconds and now I lost Paris-Nice by four seconds".

"It was a really aggressive race as we expected". I'm getting closer. Hopefully, I can improve and work hard and I take the top spot.
