In January, United boss Jose Mourinho said he expected Carrick to retire at the end of 2017-18 and join the Old Trafford coaching staff - a move the player himself acknowledges as his likely next step.

The last-16 tie is delicately balanced at 0-0 after Mourinho resorted to type by concentrating on obtaining a clean sheet at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan three weeks ago.

The two Premier League sides both head into their second legs level but only United are favourites to come through their tie with Sevilla, while Antonio Conte's men face the daunting prospect of visiting Camp Nou to take on Barcelona.

A thigh injury ruled Pogba out of the 2-1 home Premier League win over Liverpool on Saturday. The buzz in the stadium will be an obvious plus for United on Tuesday night but apart from that, the Liverpool match provided a glimpse of how Manchester United can adjust without Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman had sustained an injury during warm-up before the match but United thrived without him.

Another victory brought more praise for Scott McTominay.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season at Old Trafford this season and was rewarded with a maiden call-up into the Scotland squad on Monday for forthcoming friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary.

He knows the fans don't hate him, they're just angry with him, but it was the first time I've heard him use the word "hate" and I just think he's realising he needs to do something to ease the anger.

The 36-year-old club captain has featured sparingly for United this season, having been sidelined earlier in the campaign due to a heart scare.

Sevilla are a different side from Liverpool. That means United must win.

The Andalusians also have history to deal with - Sevilla have played six times in England and not won even once.

The former Chelsea manager reflected on how United eventually returned to the Champions League by winning last season's Europa League.

I actually watched a lot of this first leg and Besiktas didn't do badly to start with but then the game exploded on them.

At the same time, it has to be remembered that Sevilla were the team disappointed with the fact that the first leg ended goalless. The ball is now in the Mancunian court.
