President Donald Trump has ousted Rex Tillerson as secretary of state, tweeting in a surprise Tuesday morning announcement that Tillerson will be replaced by Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo.

Gina Haspel, the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will be nominated to replace Director Pompeo and she will be the CIA's first-ever female director, a historic milestone.

News of Tillerson's departure from the State Department came as the Secretary arrived back to Washington after his overseas visit to Africa, where he reaffirmed the U.S. -Africa relationship in spite of alleged vulgar comments made by the President about immigrants from African nations back in January. "Congratulations to all!", Trump said in a tweet.

To replace Pompeo at the CIA, President Trump intends to promote Deputy Director Gina Haspel to the top post.

Trump also had words of praise for Tillerson: "Finally, I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service". She will be the first woman to take that role.

Tillerson, a former Exxon Mobile CEO, has always been rumored to be unhappy with Trump's constant undermining of the State Department's stance on issues. Trump offered no explanation for the change.

The breaking point appears to be Trump's surprise announcement last week that he was willing to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to CBS News.

This is a developing story.
