Home Automation: Google Assistant, Amazon Cloud Cam Pick Up New Abilities

The Google Assistant has supported geofencing triggers for reminders before, but you've needed to set them up on your smartphone itself. Building on the voice-managed reminders that were launched back in September 2017, the new location-based reminders factor in your physical position, taking advantage of the fact that the Assistant travels with you courtesy of your phone. While some thermostats and smart lights might work, accessories from Logitech and other manufacturers won't be functional yet.

For now, only the Good Morning routine has been introduced, but more would be added soon.

The complete array of the available actions with routines is made available on the Google's routines support page.

Google now lists six routines: Good Morning, Bedtime, Leaving home, I'm home, Commuting to work, and Commuting home. The routines are unique to each user's individual voice, so different members of a house can have their own routines set up.

Find routines under the Home Control, Music and Shortcuts section on the Google Home or Assistant apps. In the USA, the existing "My Day" menu has been replaced by the Routines feature. It appears only the Good Morning routine is available for now, as Android Police reports, but the rest should go live pretty soon. The new AI features include the following improvements. For instance, users cannot program the assistant-enabled washing machine to start while leaving for work, and neither can the smart remote turn on the TV as a user gets home.

Being able to ask Google Assistant follow-up questions without needing to say the action word again has removed a lot of frustration we used to experience when interacting with the search giants virtual assistant.

Google Home devices now let you set location-based reminders. For once, Google actually meant "in the coming weeks".
