An assured away performance was led by Manchester City target Fred as Shakhtar had the better of the opening 45 minutes, pressing the Serie A side when out of possession and then attacking at speed.

Despite being a man down, Shakhtar launched a late onslaught and had several unsafe raids down the left but the home team's defence held on until the final whistle.

It took Dzeko just 22 seconds to work Andriy Pyatov for the first time, but Shakhtar would not bow easily to the hosts' early pressure and were soon knocking the ball around with confidence in the Roma half.

Shakhtar came close to extending their overall advantage when the Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi headed a floated free-kick into the box inches wide of his own far post.

Taison then had a chance from 25-yards, but his effort glided past Alisson Becker and over the woodwork.

Roma opened the scoring seven minutes into the second half when Kevin Strootman played Dzeko through on goal with a defence-splitting pass and he made no mistake with just the keeper to beat, 1-0.

"I did [think a second effort was in] but the ball somehow went wide of the goal".

Roma did not concede a goal at home in the group stage and hammered Chelsea 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico, so the home fans in the crowd of 47,693 would have been confident their side could get the job done. "If we had finished off the chances we had in the first leg the match would already have been over".

Despite being a man down Shakhtar pushed forward in search of the goal that would send them into the quarterfinals of the competition but they were unable to do so, losing 1-0 on the night and exiting the Champions League on the away goals after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.

4 - Shakhtar Donetsk have won four of their five competitive games against Roma (L1), all in the Champions League.

Also on Tuesday, Sevilla dumped Manchester United out after a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.
