Drew will play Cagney in the series about two female detectives - the younger, easy-going Cagney and the empathetic mentor Lacey - in Los Angeles.

The "Grey's Anatomy" star, whose sudden exit from the long-running Shondaland medical drama was announced earlier in the week, has signed on to star in CBS' "Cagney & Lacey" reboot, according to Deadline. Drew is cast as Cagney, an LAPD detective who's easygoing and nimble. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly starred in the original series, which ran from 1981-88.

The actress shows that she's ready for post-Grey's success with this reboot of the women-led procedural show from the 1980s.

CBS' reboot of the 1980s police procedural will move the show from NY to Los Angeles, but major plot points are expected to remain the same. CBS is particularly reboot happy, with pilots for Magnum P.I. and Murphy Brown also in contention for next season.

CBS TV Studios co-produces Cagney & Lacey with MGM Television. Drew, who plays April Kepner, will be written out of the show after the ongoing season along with Jessica Capshaw, who plays Arizona Robbins. Like most non-original cast members, she started on the show as recurring - in Season 6 - before being promoted to a series regular the following season.

Drew, who recently departed the long-running ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy", is represented by Innovative Artists, LINK Entertainment and attorney Alex Kohner. Showrunner Krista Vernoff explained the reasons for the departures, sort of: "Our job is to follow the stories where they want to go and sometimes that means saying goodbye to characters we love".
