"For me it felt like first match I ever played on the tour".

In the women's section at Indian Wells, Simona Halep took pride in rallying past 19-year-old Caroline Dolehide, while Petra Kvitova's remarkable win streak skidded to a halt against another United States teen.

Djokovic took six months off after Wimbledon past year and returned at January's Australian Open, where he lost in the fourth round. "I think it was a good match".

Federer and 10th seed Djokovic both came into the tournament seeking to become the first six-time victor of the event.

He had elbow surgery in Switzerland shortly after that. "Nerves were there. I made so many unforced errors".

Federer has already won two titles in 2018, claiming his 20th Grand Slam crown by winning the Australian Open in January. The top seed fended off a set point in the tiebreak to beat Delbonis 6-3 7-6 (6).

"To me, it's not that surprising", Federer said, as quoted by Sky Sports. Yuki Bhambri of India pulled off a surprise when he toppled ninth-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-4 6-4. I am on a good run right now and I want to maintain that.

On the men's side, Borna Coric of Croatia upset No. 13 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-1, 6-3; Jeremy Chardy beat No. 20 Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in an all-French matchup; and No. 11 Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russian Federation 6-1, 7-5.

His title defence got off to a soggy start on Saturday night when play was suspended because of rain showers with Federer up a set and tied 2-2 in the second.

Also, American Taylor Fritz defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/1), Croatia's Borna Coric breezed past Roberto Bautista 6-1, 6-3 and Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain, stopped Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 7-5.
