Carrick signed a new contract last summer as well as receiving the captain's armband, but the 36-year-old has barely featured this season having undergone treatment earlier in the season to fix an irregular heart rhythm.

"That's pretty much where I'm at, which is fine".

Carrick grew up near Newcastle but moved to West Ham aged 15, where he made his professional debut.

United boss Jose Mourinho confirmed the Englishman will have a place on his coaching team once he stops playing and with Rooney tipping him for success, it seems Carrick is set to remain a part of the Red Devils beyond the ongoing season.

The classy playmaker arrived at the club from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2006 and was awarded a testimonial previous year, in recognition of his magnificent service to the Reds.

"It's kind of being sorted out, we're still talking about it to be honest. But it's looking likely, yes".

With United out of contention in the Premier League, their sole chances of winning any silverware in Carrick's final season lie in the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup. That's where I'm at and you have got to accept it.

'Good luck to my good friend Michael Carrick who is retiring at the end of the season, ' he posted.

"It started in the Burton game and then happened again in training", Carrick said. "There were two or three times when I wondered whether it was worth still playing, but I soon got over that".

"I think it is quite refreshing to look at Scott and see how he deals with it", he said on the midfielder.

"I got back fit and I wanted to finish on my own terms really". I understood after getting back fit that I wouldn't be playing as many games as perhaps I might have done, but that's something that I understood.
