Overconfidence, last minute SP-BSP alliance undid us: Adityanath

The bypolls in UP were held on two seats - Gorakhpur and Phulpur.

"The Congress is keen on rebuilding the party in Uttar Pradesh, but that will not happen overnight", he tweeted in Hindi.

With the Bahujan Samaj Party backing its bitter rival Samajwadi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party appeared to be heading for a shock defeat in both the constituencies. And it seems to have worked.

In Gorakhpur, a consolidation of OBC-Dalit-Muslim votes, which used to get split between the SP and BSP, besides the support of smaller entities like the Nishad Party and Peace Party, worked wonders for the Samajwadi Party candidates. "Acche Din haver came, instead people brought BJP's bure din", said Yadav. That is because the seat was nearly considered a hereditary one, having belonged to the mahant, or head priest, of the Gorakhnath temple since Avaidyanath won it on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket in 1989.

The results come as a blow to the BJP, especially to Adityanath, who has five times represented the seat in the Lok Sabha. Patole has switched over to the Congress. By-polls are yet to be held in these constituencies.

The Samajwadi Party took early lead right from the beginning of the vote count that began on Wednesday morning and steadily built up the gap with its BJP rivals as officials counted the tens of thousands of votes.

While extending his good wishes to the winning candidates, the 45-year-old said they were unable to understand the "rajnaitik saudebaazi" between the SP and BSP. Together with its regional allies, the BJP also formed its governments in Nagaland and Meghalaya.

"In a general election people vote to elect a government and the BJP has always been the favourite as people want a guarantee of good governance, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought in politics".

As it became clear that the BJP was headed for a twin rout, overjoyed Samajwadi Party activists and leaders took to the streets in Phulpur and Gorakhpur to celebrate. The Samajwadi Party defeated the BJP in the two constituencies.

It would, however, be premature to write off the BJP on the basis of the results of a few Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections. There will be national issues in the general elections and local issues will be diluted.

People have taught a lesson to the BJP, said former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav while addressing the media in Lucknow.

There are, of course, many caveats here.

The result in Araria, which is one of the seats in the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region of Bihar, reflects the RJ's status as the most preferred party among Muslims and Yadavs. They might have managed to be impressively successful and thoroughly embarrassed the BJP.

The BJP also lost the Araria Lok Sabha by-election to the RJD. So, who voted against the BJP in his home turf? But the blueprint has not only been drawn out, it has proven to be a successful one.
