Acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee might be getting in on that sweet superhero movie action.

At the time, it was reported that the studio was interested luring director Spike Lee to the project and that they had writer Edward Ricourt (Now You See Me) developing a script for the film. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Lee is circling Sony's Nightwatch, based on the Marvel comics character. The Tom Hardy-headlined Venom will be the first out of the gate this fall, and already has a teaser trailer to prove it. Gina Prince-Bythewood's Silver Sable and Black Cat film Silver & Black is the only other Spider-Man spinoff besides Venom that has an official release date at the moment.

At this point, our source was unable to share any details about the plot of the film, but the character certainly fits well into the shared universe of Spider-Man characters that Sony is developing.

However, this isn't the first time Lee's been attached to the Nightwatch film. When he took off the costume and unmasked the corpse, he learned that it was actually an older version of himself.

It's been months since reports emerged that Sony Pictures is developing another Spider-Man spin-off focusing on Nightwatch. When his lover Ashley Croix's plane was hijacked by A.I.M., Trench donned the Nightwatch's super-powered battle-suit and confronted the hijackers, but the inexperienced Trench triggered an explosion, killing all aboard. Croix, who had changed planes at the last minute, later married industrialist Damon Morelle and bore his son, Nolan, whose illness required frequent skin grafts.

THR says Lee's involvement in the project is still in the early stages. It is rumored that the director will be in charge of Nightwatch. The film stars John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, Topher Grace, and Corey Hawkins. After dying, Nightwatch returned recently in She-Hulk.
