He also dismissed the alliance of the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party as a hogwash and denied giving any importance to the plan of a united front defeating BJP. And hence, SP president Akhilesh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati took no time in dropping their past political budget and join hand before the UP by-polls.

"The BJP government under Yogi Adityanath has done a very good job in UP, be it on law and order, infrastructure development, administrative improvement, ruthless eradication of corruption, taking central government schemes down to the ground, procuring farm produce fully and transparently". SP candidate Pravin Kumar Nishad got 4,56,437 votes over his nearest BJP rival Upendra Dutt Shukla who secured 4,34,476 votes. In the Phulpur assembly, which has a sizeable Muslim population, Ahmed got only 5,442 votes while the SP polled almost 99,960 votes. Before him, his mentor Yogi Avaidyanath was MP from the seat for two terms, in 1991 and 1993. Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar defeated BJP's Swaran Salaria with a clear margin of 1.93 lakh votes.

That strategy seemed to have paid off when two bickering caste-based factions worked together in the country's most politically important state, Uttar Pradesh in the north, to defeat Modi's party in two seats this week. This gross underestimation of the combined strength of his foes is a much bigger lesson to Adityanath, who will be singularly responsible for BJP-NDA-2 in 2019.

The balloting in Jehanabad and Bhabua followed the death of RJD and BJP legislators respectively.

Karnataka will witness a triangular contest among the Congress, the BJP and the JDS in most of the 224 seats that will go to polls in April/May.

The RJD fielded Sarfaraz Alam - son of Taslimuddin and a legislator of the ruling JD-U.
