But the new radar map shows that while the north and north eats is still seeing some snow and sleet, in the south the snow has shifted to the south west.

Many big sporting fixtures, including Ireland's Six Nations triumph over England and Manchester United's quarter final FA Cup fixture with Brighton, were played in snow storms.

Strong east or north-easterly winds could see snow drifts build up, especially on the hills, and the Met Office said the snow could "strand some vehicles and passengers". Chance of showers in east. Snow will thaw in most places except across highest ground where temperatures remain below freezing. Southern and eastern regions look most vulnerable overnight and early on Sunday and then southwestern areas of England and south Wales into the daytime.

An amber weather warning for snow and ice cleared at around 9am this morning (18 March), but has been replaced with a yellow one.

"It's going to be a very, very cold start, with a widespread frost and ice around as well", Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said.

"Tonight there will be further snow in places at first".

"It will bewindy and bitterly cold". Temperatures may reach 1-2c in some "lucky" spots today but take the wind into account and everywhere will be feeling sub-zero.

"Staying windy and bitterly cold, with a risk of widespread ice".

It may fall heavier this evening and overnight though, with temperatures down to around -4 °C.
