To sweeten the deal, HTC will give a free, six-month Viveport subscription for each Vive Pro purchased by June 3. "Our goal has always been to offer the most premium VR platform available and to drive adoption for VR", said Daniel O'Brien, HTC Vive General Manager, US. The existing full HTC Vive kit also drops in price another $100, now priced at $499.

The new HTC Vive Pro is available to pre-order in super-limited quantities right now, for £800. The Vive Pro is the successor to the wildly popular HTC Vive, which is widely considered to be the best enthusiast-level VR headset on the market.

The existing Vive VR headset, meanwhile, will be reduced in price to £500. The Vive Pro comes with dual organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, making for a crisper image resolution of 2880 by 1600 pixels. It also has a slightly different design (more comfortable, HTC claims), and new integrated headphones with a built-in amplifier.

The major improvements include a much-sharper, 2,880 x 1,600-pixel resolution across both lenses, improved spatial audio with an included headset and enhanced ergonomics for a comfier fit.

The Vive Pro will also be compatible with the new tracking stations that will allow up to four sensors to be connected in a VR space, offering a play area of up to 10 meters by 10 meters, a size that will likely only be attempted by location-based arcades and professionals using VR for high-level design or testing purposes. The service will increase to $8.99 after March 22 from $7.99. But I was surprised at how little difference the increased resolution seem to make when I was actually wearing the headset.

VIVE is a first-of-its-kind virtual reality platform, built and optimized for room-scale VR and true-to-life interactions.
