Volkswagen Teases Atlas Two-Row Concept Before New York Reveal

Volkswagen plans to build a new five-passenger SUV in Chattanooga.

Volkswagen will add a new SUV to its USA lineup, and we'll see it previewed in concept form at the New York Auto Show next week. Don't expect anything wild; this concept will closely signal what the finalized version will look like, but will have some typical non-production window dressing.

The new five-passenger version of the Atlas will share a substantial number of components but will feature different styling than the larger three-row, seven-seat crossover that went on sale just under a year ago in the U.S. Its name is to be announced at the NY show.

A variant of the existing seven-seat Atlas SUV already assembled at VW's Chattanooga assembly plant, the new vehicle also is engineered and designed for the United States, officials said at the Enterprise South industrial park factory. While the Atlas sits squarely in one of the most popular automotive segments in the US, there's still a lot of white space between it and the much smaller Tiguan.

The crossover is part of Woebcken's "doubling up" strategy to expand Volkswagen's sedan-heavy lineup with more crossovers. Volkswagen sold 27,119 seven-passenger Atlases previous year.

"During my time as Governor, I've watched Volkswagen Chattanooga flourish from a single vehicle producer, starting with the Passat, into what it is today-a thriving USA manufacturing operation that can produce three models, and counting", said Governor Haslam. Volkswagen has added another 9,069 sales of the Atlas during the first two months of this year.
