In the third set, Federer had the opportunity to serve for the match, holding two match points of his own, however del Potro was able to hold off any title-winning celebrations that the 36-year-old Swiss had foreseen to force deuce - before eventually securing the break.

"It was awful moment for me", Del Potro said about needing to save three match points at 4-5 in the third set. Only on the seventh set point that he had in the tiebreak did Federer convert, and the match went to a third, deciding set.

The 29-year-old Del Potro won the US Open back in 2009 but his career has been hampered by a series of injuries. "Serving 40-15, any game I probably win - I don't know what the stat is - 90-something per cent", he said, via the ATP World Tour.

"I would like to play that tiebreaker again because I don't know what the hell happened", Federer said.

Federer finally lost in 2018.

World No. 8 Del Potro is back in the top ten rankings after dropping to 1,045th before beginning his comeback from three left wrist surgeries in 2016.

To put this in perspective, and especially what she pulled off in the final rounds by beating Venus Williams in the semis and Kasatkina (who had knocked off world No. 1 Simona Helep) in the final: Osaka had never won a WTA tournament. "I'm still surprising myself, and I want to keep surprising the tennis tour". I'm really enjoying playing tennis again.

Federer, the oldest world number one in ATP history at 36, entered the final having dropped just one set, in a hard semi-final test from Croatia's Borna Coric. "After that, I made a big effort to come back and play tennis with the slice". The headline of that story pronounced del Potro as a "lovable spoiler".

It's disappointing, but I thought it was a good match. now he's here and he's won a Masters 1000.

The Swiss superstar survived a stern test from world number 49 Coric but managed to hold on for a 17-0 record this year, surpassing his prior career-best calendar year start in 2006 when he opened with 16 wins.

"You move on. There's no time to dwell over it", Fedrerer said.

While expressing frustration at his inability to capitalise on key moments, Federer praised del Potro for holding his nerves and getting to finish line. "Well done and enjoy the moment", Federer said during the post-tournament presentation ceremony.

"So I just - I have everything what I want, and I want to keep improving my game to see what can I do?"

In the second set, the normally mild-mannered Federer argued with the match umpire Fergus Murphy during a crucial tie-break. At that point, only Nadal had beaten Federer in a Grand Slam.

"Not much in between us but you deserve it. The people were excited on every single point", Del Potro said. But, after a victor from del Potro and two unforced errors from Fed, suddenly del Potro had a break point.

All it lacked was a suspenseful third-set tiebreaker, but Federer's serve unexpectedly deserted him.
