College Tells Black Comedian He Can't Make Jokes About Race

Comedian Hannibal Buress' mic was cut after making a joke about the Catholic Church's history of child abuse during his Saturday night Colossus performance, attendees said.

Buress, who had been invited to perform at the university's Colussus event, began the show by displaying an email from Loyola outlining the restrictions for the event's performers, which included a ban on discussing rape, sexual assault, race and sexual orientation.

After the background music rose in volume, effectively drowning out the comic, he left the stage for roughly 15 minutes before returning to finish his set, commenting that he had planned to adhere to the university's request before realizing that he had already been paid for the performance. He returned to close out the show, the Phoenix reported.

Leslie Watland, the assistant director of student activities and Greek affairs at Loyola told the newspaper that "student development administrators" made the decisions to pull the plug on Buress and not her department.

The decision to silence Buress was met with frustration from those in attendance, with some taking to Twitter to make their feelings heard. In a now-deleted tweet, Buress vented his thoughts on Twitter, writing, "Weird way to celebrate sweet 16", referencing the college's recent March Madness win.

The crowd reportedly started chanting, "We want Hanibal!"

Once Campus Safety reportedly stationed themselves at the front of the stage, Ally Boly, a 20-year-old worldwide studies and history double major, thought the situation was about to escalate.

'It's wild that Loyola preaches about speaking up and speaking out but they're gonna censor someone doing just that.

Buress made several references to the debacle during the rest of his set.

Footage of the gig show him telling the audience 'There were content restrictions that were put with this gig, which I agreed to, then today I was like, "Ah, fuck that"' - eliciting cheers and applause.
