The session also saw the election of Wang Qishan as the vice president of China, and Li Zhanshu as the chairman of NPC Standing Committee.

Hussain said China has made remarkable achievements in the past five years, which has not only enhanced its worldwide status and image, but also brought great changes in people's lives, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The delegates in China's National People's Congress wept with joy and social media users competed with one another to express their delight after Xi Jinping was unanimously chosen as the country's president without a limit on his term in office.

Mr Xi received all 2,970 votes for the presidency and for his position as head of the Central Military Commission. State media has said the removal of term limits will not alter conditions for retirement or create a president in perpetuity, but has offered no details.

He begins his second five-year term as the most powerful man in China since Mao Zedong, according to some observers.

Wang's appointment was opposed by one lawmaker, who wasn't identified.

"The latest reform, which is based on scientific design, is no less than an institutional revolution that is of profound significance", wrote Li He, Politburo member, and a part of the Mr. Xi's core team, in the People's Daily, the CPC's official newspaper.

Li Keqiang has earlier also specified the key goals for the country's development in 2018 that included increasing of its military budget, reducing the production of steel and coal as well as maintaining stability of the national currency.

Known internationally in his previous role as China's pointman on trade, Mr Wang could help Mr Xi deal with increasingly tense relations with the United States amid fears of a looming trade war, analysts say. He helped set up China's first investment bank with Morgan Stanley in the 1990s and also established enduring ties with prominent Wall Street figures, such as Hank Paulson.

A marathon anti-corruption campaign led by Xi has snared thousands of government officials and managers of state companies.

"Frankly speaking, (Yi's nomination is) a bit unexpected as he holds a relatively low political ranking as the alternative member of CPC Central Committee", said Tommy Xie, China economist at OCBC Bank in Singapore.

Lawmakers last Sunday also named Yang Xiaodu as National Supervision Commission chief, Zhou Qiang as Supreme People's Court president and Zhang Jun to become procurator-general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

The changes leave Xi with sole responsibility for China's $12-trillion economy, mounting debt pile, more aspirational middle class and growing overseas interests.

Both India's External Affairs Minister and Defence Minister will visit China in coming weeks, while the PM will travel to China in June for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation security grouping's summit.
