Kentucky State Police are investigating after a stolen auto in Lexington ends up with a deadly officer-involved shooting in western Kentucky.

The Trooper involved in the deadly shooting was not hurt.

Kentucky State Police say troopers were notified by the Daviess County Sheriff's Office around 4:30 p.m. Monday to assist in a trespassing complaint in the 300 block of Hill Bridge Road in Daviess County.

KSP detectives have removed the stolen Jeep used by Ruffin and taken to a secure location for processing. The suspect's identity is now unknown. As responding units approached the residence to investigate, the suspect ran out the back door of the house and got inside the Jeep.

"He was aggressively trying to flee", King said. The suspect then fled away through muddy farm fields and drove about a half-mile to a mile away from the original scene. The suspect then drove through muddy farm fields until he crashed in a ditch a mile away and took off running. The Trooper ordered the man to drop the gun, but the suspect didn't comply with the order, according to KSP.

At that point, state police say the Trooper Owens was able to catch up with Ruffin, who had a gun in his hand.

The trooper began a foot pursuit before Sorrell allegedly fired shots at the trooper.

Responders performed life-saving techniques, but the man died, King said.

Authorities reported the Jeep was stolen from Lexington. The vehicle had not been searched as of Monday night. The Trooper was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure when officers are involved in the use of force.

"We are going to have to do many interviews with the trooper" and residents in the area, he said.

The man was alone when confronted by the trooper, so officials don't know if anyone else had been with him prior to the shooting.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and we will update this story when new information is made available.
