The Syrian government and its allies have absorbed a US-led attack on Saturday and the targeted sites were evacuated days ago thanks to a warning from Russian Federation, a senior official in a regional alliance that backs Damascus said.

Confirming her country's involvement in the air strike, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said: "We would have preferred an alternative path".

Russia's ambassador to the United States warned that there would be consequences for the attacks early on Saturday, which came in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in the former rebel stronghold of Douma last weekend.

The attacks early on Saturday come in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in the former rebel stronghold of Douma last weekend. "But on this occasion there is none".

The White Helmets, a civil defense agency, blamed the Assad regime for the alleged chemical attack, which it said killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others.

However, Russia's ambassador to the USA has warned that there would be grave consequences for the attacks.

"Again, we are being threatened".

Russia, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has responded angrily to the strikes, while Syrian state media called them a "flagrant violation of worldwide law".

None of the air strikes hit zones where Russian air defense systems protect the Russian bases of Tartus and Hmeimim, Russian news agencies cited the Ministry of Defense as saying.
