The Russian Center for Reconciliation of the opposing sides in Syria together with Syrian authorities has nearly completed a large-scale operation in Eastern Ghouta, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov told reporters on Friday.

Western air strikes on Syria will not diminish the army's resolve to press the fight against all remaining militants in the country, the military said in a televised statement on Saturday.

"Humanitarian operation in the Eastern Ghouta carries on despite missile strikes against Damascus carried out by the global coalition", Maj.

"All terrorists have left Douma, the last of their holdouts in Eastern Ghouta", state news agency SANA quoted an army spokesman as saying, using the regime's usual term for rebels.

The General Command said that engineering units immediately began canvassing squares, streets, and corridors to clear mines and IEDs planted by terrorists in the city, in order to enable the rest of the units to secure liberated areas and prepare them for the return of civilians to their homes safely.

The army stressed its keenness on the lives of civilians as well as their security and protection.

The attack prompted a joint military operation by the United States, Britain and France that targeted several facilities near Damascus and the city of Homs on Saturday.

The Syrian government strongly denied the allegation, calling for the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to send a fact-finding mission for investigations.

The rebels surrendered Douma after a suspected chemical weapons attack last weekend.

Bashar al-Jaafari, the permanent representative of Syria in the United Nations, said Saturday that the fact-finding mission arrived in the capital on Saturday afternoon as the Syrian government stressed its determination to cooperate with the team.

The rebels who evacuated Douma were the ones rejecting to reconcile with the government, while others accepted to engage in a police force supervised by Russian Federation inside that district.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump announced the military action in Syria in response to the alleged chemical weapons attack in the city of Duma in the Eastern Ghouta.
