The driver of one of the cars - named as Mr NG - told the court he thought that Ant was dead after the crash, and he came round the corner "like a rocket".

He responded "guilty" to a single charge of driving while over the limit.

The charge states he had 75 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

After being involved in a collision with two other cars on 18 March in Mortlake he was breathalysed and found to be more than two times over the drink drive limit.

Ant was fined £86,000, as well as £85 in prosecution fees and a £170 surcharge, and the judge told the Saturday Night Takeaway co-host that the fine was proportionate to his weekly earnings of £130,000, and that the incident had seen him lose his "good character".

He also received a 20-month driving ban and has also been ordered to pay other associated costs totalling £390. He is now undergoing treatment for his alcohol issues.

Speaking briefly outside the court following sentencing McPartlin said: "I just want to say I'm truly sorry for what happened".

In his own statement read by his lawyer he apologised for his actions which he said he was "ashamed and mortified" by. He said, "I accept full culpability for this and wish to apologise to all those concerned".

His defence barrister Liam Walker also said 42-year-old Ant had suffered a "brief relapse" - which his mum had no idea about - and he "hopes he can be forgiven by the many people he has let down".

Ant is now seeking treatment following a stint in rehab past year, after struggling with an addiction to painkillers which he developed after a knee operation back in 2015.
