Having already made cameos in Game Of Thrones and Bridget Jone's Baby, Ed is said to have the "Midas touch" and could finally lay his hands on a leading role in Boyle's musical comedy.

Hot off the presses comes news this morning that superstar musician Ed Sheeran is set to join the Richard Curtis scripted and Danny Boyle directed musical comedy now in development.

In addition to an on-screen appearance, Sheeran has also possibly been asked to write new music for the film, which tells the story of a busker who wakes up one day as the only person on the planet who remembers The Beatles.

Right now, the plot for Boyle's musical comedy film is a closely-guarded secret, although Lily James (Baby Driver) is slated to star alongside Himesh Patel (from the British soap Eastenders) and Saturday Night Live stalwart Kate McKinnon. "If anyone can make a film about the Beatles' songs even better musically, it's him". What exactly Ed Sheeran's role will be in the film, or how important it will be to the story is now unclear.

Grammy-winning performer Sheeran, known for hits including Shape Of You and Castle On The Hill, has also previously appeared in FX series The Bastard Executioner and Oz series Home And Away. In 2014, he shared a photo of a Paul-signed guitar with the message: "For Ed, who is brilliant!"
