United had to at least draw to keep the title race mathematically alive but they were stunned at Old Trafford when Jay Rodriguez headed home after the break.

A week after City surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to United and squander the chance to wrap up the title in ideal style against their arch-rivals, it was relegation-bound West Brom who served it up on a plate.

"I don't think we deserved to lose but we gave them the opportunity to win the match by being solid in defence and smelling a chance in a set-play which they did", the Portuguese tactician added.

A serial victor as a manager with Barcelona and Bayern, Guardiola ended his first year in England at City without silverware - his only failure to win a trophy since his managerial career started back in 2007.

"It's more hard (to win in England)", he said.

With 87 points from 33 matches, City win their first Premier League title since 2013-14 under Manuel Pellegrini and their third since being bought by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.

He won three league titles with Barcelona and twice lifted the Champions League trophy during his Camp Nou reign.

Not only that but he did it with five games remaining, equalling the English top-flight record of United (1907-08 and 2000-01) and Everton (1984-85).

"These players deserve all my respect because they have been unbelievable all season".

Even though his players took some time to adapt to his playing style the first season in 2016/17, this season there hasn't been a team who has been more consistent than Manchester City. Spurs dominated the proceedings during United's previous visit to Wembley in the Premier League, and though the fixture is considered a neutral venue this time around, their rivals should have the ascendancy with the better feel of the surroundings.

On April 7, City played United and leading 2-0 at halftime had looked on course to claim the title. "You can't describe it".

Captain Vincent Kompany, Kyle Walker, Fabian Delph, John Stones and Bernardo Silva were among those who sang City songs with fans at a pub near Hale station in Altrincham.
