And in a dramatic cultural breakthough, 30-year-old rapper Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer for music in a category long reserved for classical works. According to The Associated Press, "The Pulitzer board said Monday the album is a "virtuosic song collection" and said it captures 'the modern African American life'". The Pulitzer follows the five Grammy awards won by Lamar in January for the album.

But Kendrick Lamar's surprise performance has completely sent us over the edge.

The winners of the Pulitzer Prizes in journalism and the arts are set to be announced in New York City.

His piercing raps helped him become the voice of the generation, and easily ascend as the leader in hip-hop and cross over to audiences outside of rap, from rock to pop to jazz. The movie producer's attorneys have said he denies any non-consensual sexual contact with anyone. The ties fuelled special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into alleged Russian attempts to influence the presidential election.

The reports sparked the #MeToo movement, a broad pushback against sexual harassment in many industries.

The Pulitzer prize is best known for recognising U.S. journalism, but it also gives awards for books, poetry and music. This year's music jurors were: violinist Regina Carter; Paul Cremo, a director at The Metropolitan Opera; Farah Jasmine Griffin, a professor of English, comparative literature and African-American studies at Columbia University; David Hadju, music critic for The Nation; and David Lang, a composer. The Compton rapper has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize.
