After eight games City were alone at the top, rapidly establishing a five-point gap, followed by eight and then 15 points after 15 games.

They still have a seven-point buffer over Chelsea in the race for the Champions League and boss Mauricio Pochettino is content. "But do not tell City they won title because United did not win, it is not fair on them".

Manchester City moved to within touching distance of a fifth Premier League title after bouncing back from a bitterly disappointing week to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Wembley on Saturday.

"My third league but this one is the most special", he wrote on his official Twitter account.

Whether they deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Manchester United's 1999 treble winners or the 2004 Arsenal "Invincibles" is up for debate.

Henceforth, City would eye surpassing Chelsea's record 95 points accumulated in a single season. The current domestic season has been nothing short of phenomenal for Pep Guardiola's men as they have broken record after record since the beginning of the campaign and still looks strong to break several other long-standing Premier League records.

Tottenham's record of 31 wins in a top-flight season.

"The way we played helped us reach our target".

After starting the title party with his Mancunian wife and his United-supporting father-in-law, City captain Vincent Kompany joined team-mates to raise a glass to their success. And going by the plethora by records they can break going forward, with five games still left, it seems their deolition job is not yet over.

'Especially if you've been a Blue for more than forty years.

Unlike Belgian defender Kompany, Guardiola spent Sunday afternoon playing golf with his son instead of watching the United match.

But a first Premier League title, to go with the three La Liga titles he won as manager of Barcelona and the three Bundesliga titles he delivered for Bayern Munich, will be particularly satisfying.

"The moment he can (improve) his average chances to score a goal, he will become one of the best players in the world", Guardiola said after the Saturday evening kick-off.

"It is one of the first things I noticed within the first month", he said.

'We needed a period of adaptation...his methods were the right ones, we believed in him.

It probably wasn't the ideal way to seal glory, but City won't care too much.

The 47-year-old has previously won league titles in Spain and Germany, as well as two Champions Leagues with Barca.

Former Manchester City defender Andy Hinchcliffe on Sky Sports: They have been the dominant force this season and, with the style in which they play, they are the best side the Premier League I have seen.

"These guys are fantastic, awesome - they are incredible".
