He said BZ was part of chemical arsenals of the U.S., Britain and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries, while the Soviet Union and Russian Federation never developed the agent.

"It is necessary to consider not only deliveries of missile defense systems, but also deliveries accompanied by those people who can train the personnel of these countries, so that Syria, Iran and North Korea could deploy these systems, if they wanted", Sherin said.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at a Pentagon briefing that the first allied strike targeted a scientific research center in greater Damascus involved in the development and production of chemical weapons. France, the United Kingdom and the United States will brief allies on actions taken in Syria, the official said.

But US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis struck a cautious note, telling lawmakers that the need to "stop the murder of innocent people" had to be weighed up against the risk of things "escalating out of control".

Moving to return to diplomacy, France said it was working with the United States and Britain on a draft resolution that would address chemical weapons use, the humanitarian crisis and the future of the peace process in Syria.

Announcing the strikes, US President Donald Trump criticised both Russian Federation and Iran, which have backed Assad's government.

Russian officials had said before the suspected gas attack in Douma that rebels in the eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus were plotting chemical attacks to blame the Syrian government and set the stage for a US strike.

A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to head to Douma, the site of the suspected attack.

Trump had also said last week that Putin bore responsibility for the "atrocity" in Douma.

"We welcome this operation which has eased humanity's conscience in the face of the attack in Douma, largely suspected to have been carried out by the regime", Turkey's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

We will remind, relations between Russia and great Britain strained after London accused Moscow in the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, deported from the country of the Russian diplomats.

"We did not do any coordination with Russian Federation on these strikes, and neither did we pre-notify them", Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday night. Syria serves as an important access point to the Mediterranean Sea for Russian ships and a hub for Russia in the Middle East. The Russian leader warned against "ill-considered and risky actions. that would have consequences beyond conjecture".

He accused Washington of putting worldwide peace at risk and said the situation was "very dangerous".
