After all, in the next 12 months it hopes to add a whopping 10,000 e-rickshaws and electric auto-rickshaws in its service under its "Mission: Electric" programme launched today.

Ola did not say which manufacturers would provide the three-wheelers or whether it would be the company making the purchases or whether the vehicles would be driver-owned. After a failure with electric taxis in Nagpur, the company is now ready with second plan route, called Mission Electric.

Ride hailing and sharing app Ola is betting big on the electric vehicle segment.

"The EV (electric vehicle) program in Nagpur has provided Ola with significant insights into effectively managing vehicles, batteries and operations", the company said in the statement on Monday. That's not all. The Bengaluru-based company is also aiming to get one million electric vehicles on its platform by 2021 to boost the electric vehicle ecosystem in the country.

The Indian government has its own electric ambitions. The latest is "no license" to set up a charging station for electric vehicles. But the country faces several challenges in achieving that objective, including a lack of infrastructure and expensive technology for carmakers.

Ola launched its first electric vehicle project in Nagpur a year ago and the project includes electric cabs, electric auto rickshaws, electric buses, rooftop solar installations, charging stations, and battery swapping experiments. Charging times and high-voltage drivetrains are only some of the obstacles standing in the way of large-scale electric auto adoption, which are not in effect with rickshaws.

"After more than 4 million "electric" kilometers travelled and many lessons learned, we are significantly expanding our commitment to electrify mobility in India", Aggarwal said. It has already signed a pact with automobile firm Mahindra & Mahindra for the electric vehicle business.

Ola has already launched its first electric vehicle project as a part of a pilot in Nagpur on May 26 past year. "Deployment of electric vehicles would require support of like-minded partners".

Ola launched its first electric vehicle project in Nagpur on May 26, 2017. One thing is for sure: As India's largest private vehicle fleet operator, Ola could represent a natural catalyst for EV technology in the country. Ola now has the upper hand in a fierce battle with Uber for control of the massive Indian market.
