At least seven inmates were killed and 17 injured when a prison melee broke out at a SC prison, officials said.

Prisons spokesman Jeff Taillon announced the grim outcome after State Law Enforcement Division agents helped secure Lee Correctional Institution around 3 a.m. Monday.

He said no officers were wounded.

The maximum-security facility houses about 1,500 inmates in Bishopville, about 55 miles from Columbia, and is home to some of South Carolina's most violent, longest-serving offenders. The facility has seen multiple insurrections previously, including less than a month ago when three inmates took an officer hostage briefly and assumed control of part of a dorm, per the newspaper. No inmates were injured.

"The incident at Lee CI resulted in 17 inmates requiring outside medical attention and 7 inmates were killed", the department said on its Twitter account. In October 2017, an inmate was stabbed to death and another was killed in a fight last June.
