Surf photographer Peter Jovic saw the attack from the beach and said there were only about five people in the water at the time.

'There was a lot more thrashing around.

Surf Life Saving WA said a four-metre shark and whale carcass were spotted at 10am at nearby Lefthanders surf break. After that it was hard to see what was going on.

Two-time defending world champion Tyler Wright of Australia held off a bold challenge from New Zealander Hareb to win their second-round event 14.73 to 13.03 at the Margaret River Pro.

Mr Jovic said everyone was "walking around like stunned mullets" after the attack.

"We are placing the Margaret River Pro on hold while we work with local authorities on next steps".

"The safety of our surfers and staff is a top priority".

The shark attack victim was flown to hospital after being given first aid by friends who stemmed the blood flow using a leg rope.

"Further enhanced safety measures, including ski and drone presence, will be added to the event's mitigation protocols".

A surfer mauled by a shark Monday off southwest Australia managed to swim to shore despite serious injuries to both of his legs, an official and a witness said.

#BREAKING #SHARKATTACK The patient from the Gracetown incident is a male aged in his 30s. Under an agreement with the federal government, WA fisheries officers are authorised to kill sharks that are identified as causing an "serious threat" to human life, such as those involved in an attack.

Surf Life Saving Western Australia confirmed the shark sighting after receiving a report from the public.

All three were surfers.
