Shortly after 5 p.m., police say security at a grocery store in the 1500 block of 18th Street reported a shoplifter had left and security were following him northbound across a parking lot.

Cops found the 51-year-old man unconscious on the Stop & Shop floor at Flatbush and Tilden Aves. when they responded to a shoplifting call at around 7:30 a.m., according to police.

Another shopper identified the three employees as the store's manager, assistant manager and a produce worker.

The city medical examiner will determine how the victim died.

Police are investigating the death, which occurred after the man was accused of shoplifting at the Flatbush Avenue store, the NYPD says.

Police need the public's help finding a man they say fired off gunshots in front of a hookah bar in Gowanus Saturday.

The store has said it is cooperating with authorities on an investigation.

After searching his backpack, police say the suspect also had numerous stolen items, including a hatchet, four folding knives, clothing and food. "So they wrestled him and he didn't want - he wasn't trying to be held, he was trying to get out", said Jacene McDonald. Stop & Shop released a statement saying, "There was an incident at our Stop & Shop Flatbush Avenue store this morning involving a suspected shoplifter".

His body was quickly transported to Kings County Hospital Center by emergency responders, where he was pronounced dead. New York City Police officers were immediately called to the store.
