The media appearance kicks off a publicity tour to promote the release of Comey's new book, "A Higher Loyalty", which paints a scathing portrait of the President.

Former FBI director James Comey-who has become a figurehead of the anti-Trump movement ever since he was sacked by the president-earned praise from the left for his interview with George Stephanopoulos last night.

Comey said in the exclusive interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, which aired at 10 p.m. on Sunday, that it is "possible, but I don't know" whether Russian Federation has evidence to back up the allegations about Trump's Moscow trip.

But despite his attacks, Comey said impeaching Trump would 'let the American people off the hook, ' and said the only just way to get Trump out was to do so in the voting booth.

"At the end of your interview, George, he gave a free political commercial, telling people to go out there and vote against the president and his interests", Conway said.

Stephanopoulos also asked if Comey believed the president obstructed justice, to which he replied: "Possibly".

Speaking on Sunday's "Reliable Sources" on CNN, former presidential adviser David Gergen said that Comey "can be a showboat".

The FBI director, who until his firing last May led an investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, acknowledged that it was "stunning" to think that Russian Federation could have damaging information about an American president. I saw Jim Comey last night, and I said, 'This guy swung an election?

He said it was raised in his first meeting with Trump shortly after the election in which Russian meddling in the US presidential election was discussed. "(Obama) looked directly at me", Comey recalled, according to The Washington Post.

Comey was sacked by Trump last May.

When Donald Trump fired James Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation back in May 2017, the news quickly dominated the headlines [VIDEO]. He went so far as to suggest that the truth of the salacious tale about Trump and prostitutes in Moscow is beside the point.

Comey, who ran the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly four years, portrays the president in the book as a liar, dumb and rude, and he compares elements of Trump's behaviour to that of a Mafia boss.

So, damned if you do, more damned if you don't, but Mr Comey also says he would do nothing differently given his time over - his self-belief seems pretty unshakable. "I don't know. These are more words I never thought I'd utter about a president of the United States, but it's possible".

Comey also testified a year ago that he gave some of his memos of conversations he had with Trump to a Columbia University professor, but that he had written the memos specifically to avoid including classified information. Just another of his many lies.

But overall, Mr Comey's account of the meetings he had with President Trump, including an awkward private dinner, was not that new.

Trump's tweet came the morning after Comey gave his first televised interview since he was unceremoniously fired last May while overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the United States election.

She says she rose above politics throughout the email investigation, and never discussed it with anyone from the Clinton campaign or the Democratic National Committee.
