Bayern Munich have been dealt a blow ahead of next week's Champions League semifinal first leg against Real Madrid with the news midfielder Arturo Vidal needs surgery.

Vidal is likely to miss Saturday's Bundesliga game against Hannover and next week's key duel with Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes had said on Monday that Vidal needed keyhole surgery on his right knee after twisting it awkwardly when he slipped on Sunday in training and that the Chile midfielder would be out for a "short while".

"Vidal underwent surgery on his knee yesterday, ruling him out for the rest of the season".

The season of Bayern Munich star Arturo Vidal is over, the Bavarians have announced through their official website. "The season is over for Arturo Vidal".

The Chile global had only missed six matches for Bayern this term due to a couple of injuries and suspensions, but this latest setback will prevent him from featuring in their final four league clashes, the Champions League two-legged affair with Los Blancos and the DfB Pokal Cup showdown with Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern, who face Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday in a German Cup semi-final, were crowned Bundesliga champions earlier this month for a sixth consecutive season and are bidding to win the treble for the second time in their history.
