Country legend Big Tom McBride passes away aged 81

Iconic country music star Big Tom McBride has sadly passed away at the age of 81.

Journalist and Parliamentary Correspondent of The Irish Times, Michael O'Regan, said: "Big Tom McBride was more than a popular country singer".

The news was shared on his official Facebook page on Tuesday morning, April 17.

He's been a leader in the showband scene since the 1960s.

They said he would "be sadly missed by all who knew him".

Broadcaster Lynette Fay said she was "so sorry" to hear "Ireland's King of Country" had passed away.

COUNTRY music fans across Donegal will be saddened this morning at the news that Big Tom has passed away. "May he rest in peace". He was given a lifetime achievement awards at the Irish Country Music Awards in 2016.

A statement from his family said he died peacefully.

Tom McBride from County Monaghan is best known for hits including Four Country Roads, Back To Castleblayney and The Old Rustic Bridge.

His death comes just months after his wife rose died in January.
