During a press conference outside of the South Carolina prison where seven people were killed and 17 others were injured, the South Carolina National Action Network called for prison reform in a list of demands to the South Carolina Department of Corrections and Governor Henry McMaster.

Lee Correctional Institution is located in the Town of Bishopville in Lee County, and is a Level 3 facility, meaning it houses some of the most violent offenders in the SC prison system. They say the incident began around 7:15 pm Sunday and involved multiple inmate-on-inmate altercations in three housing units. The prison, which opened in 1993, is a level 3 facility in Bishopville, SC.

Taillon said although no officer was injured in the fighting - considered one of the deadliest in the history of United States prison incidents in recent years, the injured were administered medical treatment outside the institute.

Seven of the inmates died in the worst US prison riot in a quarter-century.

The injured inmates required medical attention outside the prison, which made it more hard for authorities to restore order, Stirling said.

It was the deadliest USA prison riot since 1993, when nine inmates and one corrections officer died at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, said Steve Martin, a longtime prisons expert and now the federal monitor for the consent decree involving New York City's Rikers Island jail complex. Of late, inmates at this facility resorted to violence multiple times. One inmate killed another in February.

The youngest was 28 years old, while the oldest was 44.

The 25-year-old prison houses around 1,500 male inmates, who are among South Carolina's most violent criminals.

"How else are you going to die in prison?" Two officers were stabbed in a 2015 fight.

At 11:46 p.m. Sunday, SCDC confirmed on twitter that they, along with the State law Enforcement Division (SLED) were responding to an ongoing situation at the facility. Four inmates were killed a year ago by a pair of prisoners at Kirkland Correctional Institution. "It's not a surprise when wer have violent events take place inside the prison, any prison in the country", McMaster said.
