Oakland A's celebrate 50th anniversary with free game

Toiling in the virtual anonymity of a near-empty Coliseum, Oakland Athletics pitcher Daniel Mengden finally got his first home victory Monday night in an 8-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.

After getting shutout last Thursday in Minnesota, the same thing almost happened to the White Sox, who weren't able to scratch out a run until the ninth inning. "We had a lot of things going on that were not common to our club".

Mengden's effort was a welcome sight for a starting staff which had seen only one pitcher - left-hander Sean Manaea - pitch six innings or more in a game through the first 16 games of the season.

Mengden finished with one walk and six strikeouts in eight innings, throwing 106 pitches, 70 of them strikes. It requires a ton of focus to play a Major League Baseball game and we didn't do that today.

Chicago committed four errors in its first game since it won in Minnesota on Thursday. That was just Chicago's sixth hit. Mengden is now 1-2 with a 6.19 ERA for the Athletics through three starts.

"He gave us a great outing, worked through a few jams with minimal damage", manager Rick Renteria said. "Using all his pitches, pitching up, pitching down, was really good, and it shouldn't be a surprise to us now because we saw it a couple times a year ago". Chapman is slashing.333/.403/.650 with 20 hits, five homers, 12 RBIs and 13 runs scored, while Lowrie's line is.348/.403/.576 with 23 hits, 14 RBIs and eight runs scored. Normally a corner outfielder who has also dabbled as a first baseman, Canha made one catch on a sinking liner coming forward and in the sixth inning tracked a Matt Davidson drive to right center and caught it against the fence for the third out. An inning earlier, the A's turned a 5-3-6 double play. The Athletics are 2-5 in their last 7 during game 2 of a series, 4-1 in their last 5 vs.

Admission to the game tomorrow is actually free, although all the tickets were gobbled up months ago. Vouchers were previously given out online, and no walkups are available.

Melvin was noncommittal regarding a possible pitch-count limitation for Cahill in his Oakland return, adding that he had gone as high as 80 throws with Nashville. Once he left, the defense went into meltdown, a three-error seventh inning leading to three more runs as the A's broke the game open. "He had pretty good command of his pitches".

The White Sox will be in powder blue (!), "Chicago" scripted across the front in navy blue with "WHITE SOX" in white in the underscore, a white/blue/white trim around the neck only.

Athletics: OF Chad Pinder was reinstated from the disabled list. Miguel Gonzalez gets the ball, and he is 0-2 with a 8.68 ERA and four strikeouts this season.

There wasn't much glittering for the Sox on a cool, damp and breezy night in Oakland for their first game after three days of snow in Minneapolis.
