Rays' Kiermaier will miss 2 to 3 months with thumb injury

A spokesman for the Rays says Kiermaier's surgery will be scheduled in the coming days. His luck wasn't much better in 2017 as he suffered a hairline fracture in his hip while sliding into first base feet-first.

"It's just another freak accident".

What is going on with Rays ace Chris Archer?

Kiermaier fractured his left hand while making a diving catch against the Detroit Tigers in May 2016 that caused him to miss a big chunk of the season. "I can't believe I'm saying this for a third year in a row now", he said Sunday (via the Tampa Bay Times). Some combination of Johnny Field, Carlos Gomez, and Mallex Smith will cover center field between now and July, in all likelihood.

The Rays have recalled right-hander Chih-Wei Hu from Durham to take Kiermaier's place on the active roster.

Rays manager Kevin Cash indicated the injury could keep Kiermaier out for a "chunk" of the season. "We are all exhausted of KK getting hurt and there's nothing he can do about".

"It's beyond frustrating", Cash said. It was a typical KK play. The center fielder was sliding into second base when it happened and could be seen immediately getting up and shaking his hand out after. The guy bobbles the ball.

Rookie Johnny Field, who made his Major League Baseball debut on Saturday stepped in for Kiermaier on Sunday.

Another factor in the decision on the replacement is that lefty hitting Brad Miller is aiming to come off the DL by the end of the week, so either the Kiermaier replacement, Field or Rob Refsnyder would seem likely to go then.
