On Monday's American Idol, 12 contestants each experienced the high of performing a duet with a big-name music star.

In simpler terms, once the razzle dazzle of tonight's all star pair-up performances is over, judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan must put five more folks on the chopping block. Next to Allen Stone and Marcio, it's one of the best performances of the evening.

"I chose that particular song because I think it kind of showcased a part of me that hadn't been shown before", he said. Great performance. Lionel loved it. Katy says "I don't know what you did, but you arrived".

"You show us who you are". Bryan soon followed, and the trio embraced the sobbing singer in a sweet group hug. Katy Perry applauded her artistry, dubbing Maddie "infectious", and Lionel Richie reminded Poppe to stay on the road that she's on because big things are to come. "He's changed my life". You find out Jurnee isn't just blowing smoke when she selects Lea's little-heard track "Run to You" (off her blink-and-you-missed-it sophomore album Places) for their duet.

Katy could tell Garrett's heart was in this performance, and she was finally starting to believe that he's cool and confident.

The sixteenth season of American Idol premiered on March 11, 2018, on the ABC television network.

Maddie Poppe and Colbie Caillat, who actually auditioned twice for Idol, team up for a wonderful duet. And Katy thought the duet was handsome, telling Mara that she should combine her vulnerability with her rocker-girl quirks and edge. The 15-year-old from Galloway, New Jersey sang a powerful rendition of "Fight Song" with Rachel Platten.

Garrett Jacobs performed Shawn Mendes' "Treat You Better".

Effie Passero had the flawless confidence for Heart's hit, "Barracuda", and all the judges noticed. The two then embraced on stage. They sang "Diane" and Effie did a fabulous job with this so I don't know why she's anxious.

The American Idol victor is determined by television viewers through public voting. Another four hopeful will be sent home, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
