Ronaldo backheel goal helps Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao

Former Manchester United star Ronaldo was put through his paces along with the rest of the Real squad and seemed in good spirits despite his side being in third place in La Liga, some 15 points adrift of runaway leaders Barcelona.

The visiting side appeared on course to take all three points after Inaki Williams netted the opening goal with 14 minutes gone.

At the other end, a ball at the near post to San Jose forced Keylor Navas to an instinctive save at his near post.

This means, therefore, that the current objective for the Bavarian club is to make it to the Champions League final, a test that begins next Wednesday against Real Madrid.

Even before that, Real struck the bar when Ronaldo nodded beyond Kepa, and they were denied by a number of fine saves by the Bilbao goalkeeper. "We have a semi-final and we will fight to the death to defend our title".

Los Leones had a case for a penalty when Carvajal handled the ball but it was not given.

Marco Asensio should have extended Kepa again when he blazed wastefully over in the 22nd minute and the 23-year-old showed lightning reactions after the half hour as Raphael Varane glanced Kroos' free-kick goalwards.

Frustrations for Real were showing, Vazquez picked up a needless yellow card as Bilbao went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

'We're all on the same side and we need all the players, ' Zidane told reporters when discussing Bale and Karim Benzema.

The game should have been wrapped up for Bilbao when De Marcos's cross caused havoc in the Madrid defense. Inigo Cordoba's shot was blocked but when the ball broke to Raul Garcia 12 yards out he really should have scored only to rattle the crossbar.

Reports in Madrid have suggested the club will listen to offers for both Bale and Benzema this summer, but Benzema said he appreciates Perez's support, recalling the affection received during hard periods of his life. Kepa said he believed staying at Bilbao was the right decision as the club is his home.

The draw gives Real 68 points from 33 matches, placing them three points behind second-placed Atletico Madrid, while Bilbao move into a tie with Real Sociedad for 12th.
