The US Open will become the first Grand Slam tennis tournament to be broadcast exclusively online in the United Kingdom and Ireland, after e-commerce giant Amazon signed a five-year rights deal on Thursday.

The 2018 US Open will take place from August 27 to September 9 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NY.

A deal with Amazon to broadcast the main tournaments in men's tennis only on the internet from 2019 will be "one of the most successful this decade". Prime Video will also provide access to on-demand match highlights and other content.

In June, Prime members in the United Kingdom and Ireland can watch live and on-demand content covering the ATP's Queen's Club Championships and Eastbourne International on Prime Video as part of an ATP partnership that will feature 37 ATP World Tour events annually beginning in 2019.

"Prime Video is focused on bringing customers a great selection of high-quality entertainment across drama, comedy, documentaries, live sports and more", added Jay Marine, VP of Prime Video Europe.

The deal will kick off with the 2018 U.S. Open and offer live and on-demand content to Prime members in both territories.

In the United States, ESPN is the major rights holder for the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.

"We are proud to partner with the USTA to add the US Open to the growing portfolio of sports available on Prime Video", said Alex Green, Managing Director, Channels & Sports, Prime Video Europe.

The 2018 US Open will take place from August 27 to September 9 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NY, which has just undergone a $600m renovation.

Two packages of 20 matches each are yet to be allocated after Sky and BT Sport signed deals worth a combined £4.46 billion (S$8.22 billion) to show 160 live games.

In March, documents obtained by Reuters revealed the U.S. audience for video streamed on the Prime service amounts to around 26 million and has become a key tool in both member adoption and retention.
