Some of Google's services have stopped working in Russian Federation, as the row over encrypted messaging app Telegram intensifies.

Russia's ban on Telegram has a knock-on effect on Google services.

On 17 April, the body confirmed it had blocked millions of IP addresses, citing their potential usefulness for Telegram users to circumvent the ban.

"We are aware of reports that some users in Russia are unable to access some Google products, and are investigating those reports", said Google Russia in a Twitter statement.

On April 22, Google confirmed it was aware that some of its services had been blocked in Russian Federation as part of a dispute over the encrypted messaging app Telegram.

The Russian regulator officially announced the blockade on Google services today via a Facebook post. Google Search, Gmail and push notifications on Android are among the services seeing limited access.

Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have called on Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple to continue supporting Telegram's IP addresses and not remove it from their app stores.

Russia's communications regulator blocked some Alphabet Inc. internet addresses, blaming the USA owner of Google for helping Pavel Durov's Telegram Messenger LLP service evade government blocking.

The decision to block Telegram has also forced Kremlin officials to switch to's ICQ chat service. "Therefore, Roskomnadzor included some Google IP addresses into a register of banned internet resources".

This is the latest development in Russia's war on Pavel Durov's encrypted Telegram messenger service, which Russian authorities had started blocking on 16 April after Durov failed to comply with legislation requiring the company to give the federal security services access to users' encrypted messages.

Several demonstrations have been held in the country, with users against the ban gathering together in Moscow and St Petersburg.
