Witnesses say that the van was striking people on the sidewalk for about half a mile.

Authorities have not yet identified the suspect or his motive.

Canada's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, was briefed on the incident.

The van fled the scene after jumping the curb at about 1:30 CT and hitting people on the sidewalk just north of downtown, according to police.

Officers were called to the scene - on Yonge Street at the corner with Finch Avenue - at about 1.30pm (1.30am Tuesday, Singapore time), police said. CTV News said at least four of the hospitalized victims were in critical condition.

The attack in Toronto comes six months after eight people were killed and nearly a dozen were injured after 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov drove a rented pickup truck down a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center in New York City on October 31, 2017.

A Reuters witness saw at least two tarp-covered bodies at the site of the incident. He said he did not see the initial collision but saw the aftermath. And then he said, it just couldn't be. He;s going 70-80 clicks.

"He's just hitting people one by one, going down", the witness said. People, fire hydrants, there's mail boxes being run over...

"We're still gathering information and as soon as we can, we'll share more information with Canadians", Trudeau told reporters about an hour after news of the incident broke.

At a news conference, Toronto Mayor John Tory said that officials will establish two hotlines related to the incident.

Tory said his "thoughts are with those affected by this incident" and said the tragedy happened as people were out enjoying handsome weather.
