Police say multiple pedestrians struck by van in Toronto

Witnesses say that the van was striking people on the sidewalk for about half a mile.

Authorities have not yet identified the suspect or his motive.

Canada's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, was briefed on the incident.

The van fled the scene after jumping the curb at about 1:30 CT and hitting people on the sidewalk just north of downtown, according to police.

Officers were called to the scene - on Yonge Street at the corner with Finch Avenue - at about 1.30pm (1.30am Tuesday, Singapore time), police said. CTV News said at least four of the hospitalized victims were in critical condition.

Cass said the patients suffered a range of injuries, some serious.

Shoes laid on the street as first responders secured the area.

"This is a time when this community should come together".

Asked if there was any evidence of a connection to worldwide terrorism, the chief said only, "Based on what we have there's nothing that has it to compromise the national security at this time". Authorities later caught up to the van and its driver. "If anybody was on that street, they would have been hit on the sidewalk".

The attack in Toronto comes six months after eight people were killed and nearly a dozen were injured after 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov drove a rented pickup truck down a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center in New York City on October 31, 2017.


A Reuters witness saw at least two tarp-covered bodies at the site of the incident. He said he did not see the initial collision but saw the aftermath. And then he said, it just couldn't be. He;s going 70-80 clicks.

"All I could see was just people one by one getting knocked out, knocked out, one by one", Shaker said.

"He's just hitting people one by one, going down", the witness said. People, fire hydrants, there's mail boxes being run over...

Video from the scene shows Minassian telling police that he "has a gun in his pocket" as they attempt to bring him into custody. He said separate hotlines had been set up for victims' families and for witnesses.

He first saw a man unconscious at the side of the road and figured it was a bad accident after also noticing debris from a vehicle. And I know nothing about this person. Rodger referred to the men who always seemed to win with women as "Chads" and the women who turned men down as "Stacys".

"She's face down on the concrete, a lot of fluid coming out of her head", Ali said.

Alek Minassian allegedly got behind the wheel of a van & plowed through pedestrians on a sidewalk in Toronto, killing 10 people. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by the bad incident at Yonge and Finch [Streets] in Toronto", Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a tweet.

"We're still gathering information and as soon as we can, we'll share more information with Canadians", Trudeau told reporters about an hour after news of the incident broke.

At a news conference, Toronto Mayor John Tory said that officials will establish two hotlines related to the incident.

Tory said his "thoughts are with those affected by this incident" and said the tragedy happened as people were out enjoying handsome weather.
