28-year-old Vannathamveetil Soumya, resident of Padannakkara near Pinarayi in the district, who was arrested on the charge of poisoning to death her daughter and also her parents, has been given in police custody for four days, after she was presented in the chief judicial magistrate court in Thalassery on Wednesday evening.

This is a well-planned series of murders executed by Soumya, and the motive behind was to lead life according to her whims and fancies, without being questioned by anybody, said police.

Subsequently, Aishwarya's body was exhumed yesterday by the police and the viscera was sent for chemical examination to check the presence of any residue of Aluminium Phosphide in her body. Police sources said the interrogation is going on to arrest a youth, having illicit relationship with her. Though two other persons were taken into custody, they were let off later.

Her family mysteriously died over a period of four months: On January 31, her daughter Aishwarya died, her mother V Kamala (68) died on March 7, and on April 13, her father Kunhikannan (76) passed away. Soumya was taken for questioning when she was convalescing at a state-run hospital near here after being admitted for nausea and indigestion - incidentally, the same symptoms that her parents and her elder daughter suffered before they died. According to police, Soumya, however, denied of any role in the death of her one-year-old daughter in 2012. She was also a collection agent of a Cooperative Society in Thalassery.

According to police, the 34-year-old woman confessed to her crime after almost 11 hours of questioning. Soumya was questioned by a police team which included the ASP and Circle Inspector K.E. Premachandran. Police are of the opinion that besides Soumya, none others are involved in the murder.
